Chargers coach Turner seeks first win over Chiefs
Dec 2, 2007 - 12:31 PM San Diego (6-5) at Kansas City (4-7) 1:00 pm ESTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner gets another crack at a team he never has beaten.
Trying to stay atop the AFC West, the Chargers visit the reeling Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Turner, who is 0-6 against Kansas City, was in position to get his first victory against the Chiefs in the earlier meeting between the teams this season.
But the Chiefs rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to record a 30-16 victory in San Diego on September 30. Kansas City has not swept the Chargers since 2003.
After posting a league-best record of 14-2 last season under Marty Schottenheimer, San Diego has experienced an up-and-down campaign in Turner's first season as coach.
Still, the Chargers have a one-game lead over the Denver Broncos in the mediocre AFC West.
Last week, San Diego turned in one of its best performances of the season, routing the Baltimore Ravens, 32-14. Philip Rivers passed for 249 yards and three touchdowns - two to tight end Antonio Gates.
The All-Pro tight end had been quiet in the Chargers' previous three games but caught six passes for 105 yards against the Ravens.
LaDainian Tomlinson ran for only 77 yards but become the 23rd player in NFL history to surpass 10,000 yards rushing.
After nearly upsetting the Indianapolis Colts two weeks ago, the Chiefs suffered a bad loss last week, falling to the Oakland Raiders, 20-17, for their fourth straight defeat.
The win snapped Oakland's nine-game losing streak to the Chiefs and 17-game slide against AFC West opponents.
Brodie Croyle dropped to 0-3 as the Chiefs' starting quarterback, throwing for under 200 yards in each game.
Kansas City also has been getting a sub-par performance from kicker Dave Rayner, prompting the team to sign 43-year-old John Carney on Tuesday.
