Jets, Favre try to focus on Chiefs
Oct 21, 2008 - 4:59 PM Kansas City (1-5) at NY Jets (3-3), 1:00pm, EDTEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Brett Favre vehemently denied a Fox Sports report that he leaked trade secrets about his former team to the Detroit Lions.
Presumably, Favre will be able to focus this week on his current team, the New York Jets, who look to rebound from a bad loss when they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
According to the Fox story, the future Hall of Famer allegedly gave the Detroit Lions an in-depth tutorial about the Green Bay Packers, for their September 14 meeting. The report claims Favre spent between 60 and 90 minutes discussing nuances of the Packers' offense with Lions coaches.
Favre told Sports Illustrated the story simply isn't true.
"Total BS . . . not true and pretty ridiculous," he said. "I'm telling you it's not true. What the (heck) is their problem?"
The Jets (3-3) have problems of their own, as they are taking on the look of a .500 team. Last week, they were swallowed up in the "Black Hole," suffering a 16-13 overtime loss to the Oakland Raiders.
The Jets got a second chance as Oakland coach Tom Cable called a timeout just before Jay Feely missed a 52-yard field goal at the end of regulation. Feely converted the second opportunity.
The Jets played conservatively in overtime, however, and the Raiders prevailed when Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 57-yard field goal - the longest in franchise history.
Favre, who threw two interceptions, called it one of the worst losses of his career.
Now, the Jets return home to face a Chiefs team that appears to be in disarray - though the same might have been said about the Raiders.
Kansas City (1-5) is coming off a 34-10 home loss to Tennessee, a game in which the Chiefs allowed the Titans to rush for a franchise-record 332 yards.
As usual, the Chiefs' quarterback situation is unsettled. Brodie Croyle will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a sprained knee against Tennessee.
Damon Huard has an injured right thumb and also may not be available. That would leave the Chiefs' offense in the hands of 24-year-old Coastal Carolina product Tyler Thigpen, who was thrust into the starting lineup in Week Three against the Atlanta Falcons but tossed three interceptions in a 38-14 loss.
The only other signal caller on the roster is Ingle Martin, a journeyman reserve who has never thrown an NFL pass and was just signed off the Titans' practice squad last month.
