Defense steps up as Cologne edges Rhein in NFL Europa
Apr 28, 2007 - 10:17 PM DUSSELDORF, Germany (Ticker) -- Chris Reis returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown as part of a strong defensive performance as the Cologne Centurions edged the Rhein Fire, 14-6.Derrick Ross had a seven-yard touchdown run for the Centurions, who allowed just 169 total yards and 11 first downs.
Cologne (2-1) was clinging to a 7-6 lead when Reis, allocated by the New Orleans Saints, picked off a pass from Cody Pickett intended for Cincinnati Bengals tight end Sean Mulcahy and took it all the way for a 14-6 lead with 11:42 to play.
Pickett completed just 10-of-22 passes for 81 yards.
Ross, allocated by the Kansas City Chiefs, had 66 yards on 17 carries. Defensive end Jason Hall of the Carolina Panthers had two sacks for the Centurions.
Connor Hughes of the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked two field goals for Rhein (1-2). The first was set up by Steelers linebacker Richard Koonce's interception of Erik Meyer, who was 9-of-17 for 71 yards.
