Final - 2OT
Rangers beat Panthers 2-1 in shootout
Nov 26, 2009 - 4:33 AM By SARAH LARIMER Associated Press WriterSUNRISE, Fla.(AP) -- Henrik Lundqvist did in a shootout what he couldn't do in regulation - stop all of Florida's shooters.
Lundqvist made 25 saves in regulation and overtime, then stopped Nathan Horton, Steven Reinprecht and Stephen Weiss in the tiebreaker to help lift the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Panthers on Wednesday night.
P.A. Parenteau scored in the shootout, and Marian Gaborik had a power-play goal in the second period for New York, his NHL-leading 19th goal of the season.
Dominic Moore tied it late in the third period for the Panthers (10-9-4), who haven't lost in regulation in eight games. Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun, who made 42 saves Monday night in a 3-2 overtime loss to Pittsburgh, stopped 27 shots.
The Rangers (13-10-1) won consecutive games for the first time since a seven-game winning streak from Oct. 3-17. They beat Columbus 7-4 on Monday night.
"We'll take it, It's been a battle the last couple of weeks," Lundqvist said.
Parenteau was playing in his seventh game with the Rangers this season, and said he is "just trying to do my best when I get the chance."
"I just wanted to see what he's going to give me," Parenteau said. "He gave me the blocker side low. I never really faced a guy who catches on the other side. I wasn't sure what to do, I just dragged the puck and let it go at the right time."
Moore tied it with 4:53 left in regulation with his second goal of the season.
New York's Sean Avery failed to handle a pass and Moore picked up the puck and then fired wrist shot past Lundqvist. The shot went to Lundqvist's glove side and into the net, spoiling what would have been the 22nd shutout of Lundqvist's career and his second of the season.
The Rangers opened the scoring with 24.4 seconds left the second period. Positioned near the crease to Vokoun's right, Gaborik redirected a shot from Chris Drury, who returned to the ice after missing five games because of a concussion.
"They were desperate tonight, much more desperate than when we saw them in Madison Square Garden," said Panthers coach Pete DeBoer, whose team beat the Rangers 3-2 in New York on Saturday.
Gaborik extended his points streak to eight games. He's been held without a point in only two games this season, his first with New York.
"I thought we played well in all facets of the game," Rangers coach John Tortorella said. "I liked what I saw as far as people standing up for one another. That's all part of growing as a team."
NOTES: Florida recalled LW Steve MacIntyre from Rochester (AHL). MacIntyre fought Donald Brashear in the second period ... Florida C Gregory Campbell remained sidelined with an upper-body injury. ... The Panthers managed just two shots on goal during the scoreless first period. The Rangers had eight. ... Rangers D Wade Redden left in the game in the first period with a shoulder injury and did not return.
