Sedin's late goal and shootout tally lift Canucks
Sep 22, 2009 - 5:35 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia(AP) -- Daniel Sedin scored his second goal with 0.2 seconds left in the third period to tie the game and added the winner in the fourth round of a shootout to lift the Vancouver Canucks to a 5-4 preseason victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.Vancouver appeared to tie it when Mason Raymond jammed a puck under Curtis McElhinney with 10.1 seconds left. But it was waved off immediately because the whistle had blown.
After the restart, Sedin pounced on a loose puck in the slot and waited patiently before snapping it under the goalie.
Sedin then scored in the first extra shoutout round to seal a wild win that included the Canucks blowing a three-goal lead.
Cory Schneider made just 13 saves in his first start, but stopped three of four in the shootout to help the Canucks remain perfect (5-0-0) in the preseason.
Kyle Wellwood, Sedin and Raymond staked Vancouver to an early lead. But Curtis Glencross and Jamie Lundmark scored four minutes apart in the second period, Jay Bouwmeester tied it early in the third period and set up Olli Jokinen's power-play goal to put the Flames ahead with 7:09 left.
Curtis McElhinney finished with 30 saves for the Flames.
Theoren Fleury, who has become Calgary's biggest preseason story as he attempts to make it back to the NHL on a try out six years after his last game, helped set up the tying goal early in the third period, passing the puck to Brandon Prust just before taking a huge hit from along the boards.
The 41-year-old, who had a goal and assist in a 5-2 win over Florida Sunday, was back on his feet to celebrate when Bouwmeester snapped Prust's quick pass between Schneider's legs. But Fleury, who helped the Flames win the 1989 Stanley Cup, didn't get a chance to repeat his heroics from four nights earlier, when he scored the shootout winner in his first game since being suspended indefinitely in 2003 for violations of the NHL substance abuse policy.
Wellwood opened the scoring on a penalty shot 3:26 in after being hauled down by Bouwmeester on a breakaway and Sedin doubled the lead on a 3-on-2 pass from twin brother Henrik four minutes later. Raymond made it 3-0 after McElhinney stopped his sharp-angle shot only to have the puck jarred loose and over the line after Raymond bumped him while leaping through the crease.
