Commodore and Mason carry Columbus past Ducks
Nov 20, 2010 - 6:45 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Mike Commodore's late second-period goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Columbus Blue Jackets held on to beat the Anaheim Ducks, 4-3, at Honda Center.Rick Nash, Chris Clark and Jakub Voracek also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won eight of their last 11 games. Steve Mason finished with 47 saves to earn the victory.
"Obviously it's another road win -- we found a way to get it done," said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. "I know that it was ugly in the third, we were really scrambling there. But all in all we found a way to win the hockey game."
Bobby Ryan, Saku Koivu and Corey Perry each lit the lamp for Anaheim, which suffered its fourth straight loss, all coming by one goal. The Ducks had won five in a row at home.
Jonas Hiller stopped 25 shots in defeat.
Nash notched the lone goal of the first period, taking a pass from Derick Brassard and avoiding Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf before sending a shot from the slot past Hiller.
Koivu tied the game on a power play 17 seconds into the middle stanza. Skating 5-on-3, Koivu tapped in a feed from fellow Finn Teemu Selanne.
Ryan chased down a loose puck and scored on a shorthanded breakaway to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead at 5:01 of the second period.
Still on the power play, Clark scored on a deflection 25 seconds later. Voracek then buried the rebound of a Samuel Pahlsson shot through the pads of Hiller to put Columbus up 3-2 with 6:12 remaining. Commodore's floater from the point found the back of the net to make it 4-2 with 3:04 left.
A miscue behind the Columbus net resulted in a goal by Perry at 7:22 of the third period. The Ducks peppered Mason with 25 shots over the final 20 minutes.
"We got the start we wanted and we just couldn't get another one past (Mason)," Getzlaf said. "Our focus has to be to play a full 60 minutes. We had a little lapse in the second period there and it ended up costing us."
