Burns lifts Wild over Kings in OT

Dec 12, 2010 - 7:00 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Brent Burns scored 2:50 into overtime on the power play, and the Minnesota Wild dealt the Kings a rare home loss with a 3-2 victory at Staples Center.

Skating with a 4-on-3 advantage after Drew Doughty's interference infraction in overtime, the Wild peppered Jonathan Quick with several shots. Eventually, Burns was able to one-time a Patrick O'Sullivan feed past Quick from the slot to give Minnesota its second straight victory.

"It's nice to get a power play goal against this team since they've only allowed one at home," Burns said. "So we knew it would be a tough job. We killed a lot of penalties. It was a gutsy effort by everybody, everyone blocking shots."

Mikko Koivu and Cal Clutterbuck both scored after a Quick stick-handling gaffe for the Wild, who are 2-0-2 in their last four games. Jose Theodore made 24 saves in the victory.

Dustin Brown had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Smyth also scored for the Kings, who failed to complete a perfect four-game homestand. Los Angeles fell to 11-2-1 at home this season.

Quick made only 18 stops in defeat.

Koivu scored the lone goal of the first period on Quick's first mistake.

A loose puck trickled slowly into the Los Angeles zone, and Quick came out to make a relatively routine pass up ice. However, Koivu was there to intercept the pass and fire the puck into the wide-open net 2:50 into the game.

Brown tied the contest 9:25 into the second period on his 10th goal of the season. Anze Kopitar's initial shot was stopped, but Brown corralled the rebound in the slot and fired it past Theodore.

Only nine seconds later, Clutterbuck put Minnesota back ahead on Quick's second error. Off the faceoff from center ice, Cam Barker routinely dumped the puck into the Los Angeles zone. Quick went behind the net to fetch it and steer it away, but Clutterbuck intercepted the weak clearing attempt and placed the disc into the net before Quick got back into position.

"It's extremely unfortunate," Quick said. "We outplayed them for a majority of that game. You just got to be better, you can't make those mistakes. Those can't happen."

The Kings were able to tie the game 1:09 into the third, though, when Smyth easily redirected a Kopitar pass for a power-play tally. Smyth positioned himself near the left post and went unmarked, and Kopitar slid him the puck from the right circle.

The season series is tied, 1-1...The Wild improved to 6-5-2 on the road...Each of the four games during the Kings' homestand ended with a one-goal margin...Los Angeles went a pitiful 1-for-9 on the power play. It had a total of 15:15 with the man advantage. Minnesota went 1-for-4 overall.
