Sabres top Kings in Berlin

Oct 8, 2011 - 9:05 PM Berlin, Germany (Sports Network) - Luke Adam scored twice early in the second period to help Buffalo build a three-goal lead, and the Sabres held on for a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday to start the season with two straight wins in Europe.

Paul Gaustad and Drew Stafford also scored for the Sabres, who were coming off a 4-1 victory over Anaheim in Helsinki, Finland, on Friday. Ryan Miller made 31 saves against LA on Saturday, including 12 in a scoreless first period.

The Kings, who beat the Rangers in Stockholm on Friday, got both of their goals from Anze Kopitar in this one. Jonathan Bernier allowed four goals on 26 shots.

Buffalo and LA were among four NHL teams that started the season with two games in Europe. The Sabres are off until their home opener against Carolina next Friday, while the Kings will play at New Jersey on Thursday.

Adam scored twice in a 2:20 span in the second period to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead.

On the first goal, he beat Bernier with a snap shot from the left circle using Kings defenseman Alec Martinez as a screen. For the second, he picked up a loose puck at the side of the LA net and stuffed it home after a couple of tries in front.

Gaustad made it 3-0 at the 13:19 mark when he deflected Nathan Gerbe's shot from the right side past Bernier, but Kopitar beat Miller on a one-timer from the point during a power play to get LA on the board with 39 seconds left in the period.

On a power play, Stafford scored through a bunch of players gathered in front of the net 3:58 into the third period to give the Sabres a 4-1 lead. Kopitar netted his second goal with 4:14 remaining for the final margin.

Game Notes

Buffalo had a goal disallowed on a high stick by center Cody McCormick in the third period...Buffalo was 1-for-4 on the power play, while LA went 1-for-3.
