D'Agostini scores in OT to lift Blues over Hurricanes

Oct 22, 2011 - 3:48 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Matt D'Agostini scored the game-winning goal in overtime, sending the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at Scottrade Center.

With about a minute to go, the Blues won a key offensive zone faceoff and the puck made its way to Vladimir Sobotka in the right corner. Sobotka found D'Agostini standing alone in front and the winger one-timed it in behind Cam Ward at 3:58 of the overtime period.

"We felt that if we kept at it, kept getting pressure in the blue paint, we'd get what we needed," Blues head coach Davis Payne said.

Blues captain David Backes and veteran forward Jason Arnott scored, while Brian Elliott made 27 saves for the Blues, who snapped a two-game skid.

Brandon Sutter had a goal and an assist and Jay Harrison scored for Carolina, which had its three-game winning streak halted. Ward stopped 40-of-43 shots fired his way.

Carolina opened the scoring at the 6:52 mark of the first stanza thanks to some solid forechecking. The puck was chipped down into the right corner and three Hurricanes swarmed to the puck and got it free to Harrison, who fired a slap shot from the right point that got through the traffic in front and past Elliot for a 1-0 advantage.

Sutter gave Carolina a 2-0 lead at 1:33 of the second period thanks to some sloppy play by St. Louis. Controlling the puck at the left point, Blues forward Patrik Berglund attempted a cross-ice pass to Roman Polak standing at the other point position. The pass was poked out to the neutral zone by Patrick Dwyer, sending Sutter in alone on Elliot and he made no mistake in burying the shot.

"We looked a little bit like the road team I thought tonight and we had a few chances that didn't go in," Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice said. "They threw a lot at our net. It wasn't our best but we'll take the point and go."

The Blues got within one at 5:18 of the second period when Jamie Langenbrunner found a loose puck in the slot and snapped it on goal. Ward was there to kick it out with his right pad but the rebound went right to Arnott in front and the big center tapped it home to make it 2-1.

Backes tied the game for St. Louis at 16:09 of the second period off a broken play in the offensive zone. Backes picked up a loose puck in the high slot and fired one that went off Bryan Allen's stick and took a fortunate bounce to the front of the net, where Backes found himself in perfect position to tap it home to make it 2-2.

Brothers Anthony (Carolina) and Chris (St. Louis) Stewart played against each other for the first time at the NHL level...St. Louis went 0-for-1 on the power play, while Carolina was 0-for-2..The Blues will travel to Philadelphia to tangle with the Flyers on Saturday, while Carolina will head to Winnipeg to play the Jets, also on Saturday.
