Wellwood leads Winnipeg over Carolina
Oct 23, 2011 - 4:19 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Kyle Wellwood had a goal and an assist as the Winnipeg Jets took a 5-3 win over the Carolina HurricanesAlexander Burmistrov, Evander Kane, Andrew Ladd and Jim Slater each had a goal for the Jets, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
"I think we were a lot more aggressive," said Kane. "We wanted to put pressure on their defense and create offense off of that. We had a lot more energy going into the second and third period and we used that to our advantage."
Ondrej Pavelec started in net for Winnipeg but was pulled after just 6:43 for letting in two goals on five shots. Chris Mason played the rest of the game and gave up just one goal on 19 shots.
Jeff Skinner had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes, who have dropped their past two games. Brian Boucher gave up all five goals on 24 shots.
The Hurricanes got on the board just 4:40 in when Jussi Jokinen jammed home the puck from in front and it was 2-0 two minutes later as Skinner slammed in a Chad LaRose rebound in front.
That prompted a goaltender change and Winnipeg responded by scoring the next five goals.
On the power play, Burmistrov made it a one-goal game when he wristed home a rebound from the right circle at the 12:32 mark of the first.
Again on the power play, Wellwood tied it when he slipped home a Nik Antropov feed at the left side for his third goal of the year with just two seconds left in the first.
Slater gave the Jets their first lead of the game when he skated into the Carolina end down the right wing and beat Boucher with a slap shot at the 4:29 mark.
A minute and a half later, Ladd's slap shot on a bouncing puck from the left point fooled Boucher for a 4-2 advantage.
Kane nabbed his first goal of the season at the 7:30 mark when Antropov sent a pass from the right side of the net to the front where Kane slipped it home.
"We had a real rough second period, and weren't very good," said Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. "I'm not blaming the bounces, but they just weren't going (our way)."
Tuomo Ruutu scored at the 8:58 mark of the third to make it a two-goal game, but Carolina was unable to get any closer.
