Hurricanes pay a visit to Winnipeg

Oct 22, 2011 - 3:38 PM (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to get back in the win column today when they visit the Winnipeg Jets for a Southeast Division battle at the MTS Centre.

Carolina, which began the year with three losses, had won three straight before dropping an overtime decision in St. Louis on Friday. Matt D'Agostini scored the game-winning goal in OT, sending the Blues to a 3-2 victory over at Scottrade Center.

With about a minute to go in the extra session, the Blues won a key offensive zone faceoff and the puck made its way to Vladimir Sobotka in the right corner. Sobotka found D'Agostini standing alone in front and the winger one- timed it in behind Cam Ward at 3:58 of the overtime period.

Brandon Sutter had a goal and an assist and Jay Harrison scored for Carolina. Ward stopped 40-of-43 shots fired his way.

"We looked a little bit like the road team I thought tonight and we had a few chances that didn't go in," Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice said. "They threw a lot at our net. It wasn't our best but we'll take the point and go."

The Hurricanes have played the last two games without centerman Zac Dalpe (lower body) and the young pivot will miss another test tonight. Sutter was recalled from the AHL to take Dalpe's place on the roster.

The Jets, meanwhile, have not fared well in their first season since moving from Atlanta to Winnipeg. The former Thrashers have lost five of their first six games and are coming off Thursday's 4-1 loss in Ottawa.

Ottawa allowed less than five goals for just the third time this season as Craig Anderson made 35 saves to help the Senators skate to the easy win over the Jets.

Dustin Byfuglien had the lone goal for the Jets, who have lost two in a row since defeating Pittsburgh for their only win of the year. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 26-of-29 shots in the loss.

"It's really frustrating out there right now," said Pavelec. "But the easy thing to do is start pointing fingers. We'll talk about it and come back out for Saturday's game."

Winnipeg defenseman Ron Hainsey and forward Jim Slater are questionable for tonight's game. Hainsey has sat out the last two games with an upper-body injury, while Slater missed Thursday's game with flu-like symptoms.

Carolina won five of six games against the Thrashers last year and has taken six of seven overall in the series, but the Hurricanes have yet to face their division rival since the move to Winnipeg.
