Senators edge Maple Leafs

Oct 31, 2011 - 3:38 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Kaspars Daugavins' first NHL goal wound up being the game-winner, as the surging Ottawa Senators edged the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, at Scotiabank Place.

Colin Greening and Chris Neil each netted power-play goals for Ottawa, which extended its win streak to six games. The Senators' current run followed a 1-5-0 start to the season.

Robin Lehner made 23 saves to record a win in his season debut.

Clarke MacArthur tallied twice and Jonas Gustavsson stopped 27 shots for the Maple Leafs, who were denied a third straight win.

An innocuous-looking shot by Daugavins from the top of the right circle managed to elude Gustavsson, pushing Ottawa's lead to 3-1 at the 7:08 mark of the third period.

After MacArthur pumped home his second goal of the game at 9:07, Toronto continued to pressure for the equalizer, forcing Daugavins to commit a hooking penalty. The Maple Leafs had a couple excellent chances during the man advantage, but couldn't put the puck behind Lehner, who appeared in eight games for the Senators last season.

"At the end of the game, we defended way more than I would have liked. We defended well enough to win the game obviously, but we played most of the third period in our own end," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean.

MacArthur and Greening traded power-play goals in the first period. The former fired a wrister from between the circles, while the latter gathered David Rundblad's stretch pass from deep in his own zone at the enemy blue line and scored on a breakaway.

"The first goal they scored, we got caught napping," said Toronto head coach Ron Wilson.

Neil redirected Erik Karlsson's blast from the point past a screened Gustavsson to put Ottawa up 2-1 at the eight-minute mark of the second period.

Game Notes

The Senators improved to 5-2-0 at home this season...MacArthur has a three- game goal-scoring streak...Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin each had two assists for Toronto.
