Gerbe helps Sabres down Flames

Nov 5, 2011 - 4:43 AM Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Nathan Gerbe's goal early in the third period proved to be the difference as the Buffalo Sabres edged the Calgary Flames, 2-1, at First Niagara Center.

Drew Stafford netted the other goal for Buffalo, while Jhonas Enroth made 28 saves as the Sabres snapped a two-game losing streak.

Alex Tanguay lit the lamp for Calgary and Henrik Karlsson stopped 42-of-44 shots for the Flames, losers in two of their last three games.

"It was maybe the best game I've seen him play," Flames captain Jerome Iginla said about Karlsson. "Unfortunately we couldn't get him the win."

Buffalo struck first when Derek Roy sent a cross-ice pass from the right circle to the top of the left, and Stafford's one-timer sailed past the glove of Karlsson and into the top-right corner of the net at the 7:59 mark of the opening period.

After a scoreless second period in which the Flames failed to convert on three power-play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 chance, Buffalo added to its lead less than two minutes into the third.

Marc-Andre Gragnani took a snap shot from the left point that deflected off the stick of Flames winger Lee Stempniak and went right to Gerbe at the right circle. Gerbe then one-timed the disc right into the open side of the net before Karlsson could react to the deflection for a two-goal advantage.

"I just wanted to one-time it as quick as possible," Gerbe said. "It was a pretty lucky chance there."

Calgary cut into the lead at the 5:45 mark of the third when Tanguay got his stick on Jay Bouwmeester's shot from the blue line and the tipped puck bounced off the right post before trickling across the goal line.

But the Flames would not manage to get another puck past Enroth as Buffalo held on to improve to 3-4-0 on home ice this season.
