Pouliot scores late as Bruins down Devils

Nov 16, 2011 - 6:47 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Benoit Pouliot's tally with 3:01 left in regulation capped a wild third period and sent Boston past New Jersey, 4-3, at TD Garden.

Brad Marchand and Shawn Thornton also tallied in a three-goal final stanza for the Bruins, who have reeled off six straight wins.

Tim Thomas stopped 27 shots for the victory.

"They really tested us, they really worked hard

Nick Palmieri tallied twice and David Clarkson once for the Devils, losers in two of their last three.

Johan Hedberg played well in defeat, making 33 stops.

"We got away from our game plan," Devils head coach Pete DeBoer said. "They took us off our game plan a little bit and we didn't respond the right way. We didn't win enough faceoffs, we didn't do enough of the little things at the end to win games -- that's what good teams do."

After a right-circle faceoff win, Joe Corvo sent a shot on net, and though Pouliot misfired on his chance from the outer edge of the right circle, the puck had just enough force to fool Hedberg and get by him to the far post with 3:01 to play.

"I was like 'Oh boy, that's not going to get there,'?" Pouliot said.

Hedberg was called to the bench with 50 seconds remaining, and the Devils buzzed in their offensive zone. Thomas had to make a sprawling save to prevent a floating shot from veering in with five seconds left, which preserved the narrow decision.

The Devils capitalized on a two-man advantage to gain the game's first goal.

Petr Sykora slid a cross-ice pass from the right side and Clarkson managed to squeeze a one-timer from the left circle past Thomas at 10:46.

But Chris Kelly evened the score with 5:08 left in the second, whipping home a Gregory Campbell feed from the left side.

Marchand put the B's up at the six-second mark of the third on a clean breakaway set up by a lead pass from Zdeno Chara, but Palmieri knotted the game at 2:08 on a redirection.

Thornton's first goal of the year -- potting a rebound of a Jordan Caron chance -- restored Boston's one-goal edge at 3:40, but Palmieri answered for a 3-3 deadlock at 6:56.

Hedberg slid across to the right post to rob Nathan Horton with 8 1/2 remaining, then Horton hit the crossbar just over a minute later.

Game Notes

Boston has taken five of its last six meetings with New Jersey since March of 2010...Palmieri posted his first career two-goal game...Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk was scratched for the fifth straight game with a bothersome groin issue.
