Final
Maple Leafs rout Capitals
Nov 20, 2011 - 6:50 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Seven different players recorded a goal as the Toronto Maple Leafs ran away with a 7-1 decision over the struggling Washington Capitals.Tim Connolly, Matt Frattin, Tyler Bozak, Phil Kessel, Joffrey Lupul, Cody Franson and David Steckel all lit the lamp for Toronto.
"We felt we've been close to something like this for the past couple of games," said Lupul. "Penalty kill was good, power play was good, everyone contributed. A good night all around."
Jonas Gustavsson made 40 saves as the Maple Leafs put a halt to a three-game slide.
Tomas Vokoun started in net for Washington but was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 18 shots.
Michal Neuvirth stopped 8-of-11 shots in relief in Washington's fourth straight loss.
Brooks Laich notched the Capitals' lone goal.
"We made too many mistakes out there tonight," said Laich. "And give them credit, they pounced on most of the mistakes we made. That's what good teams do."
Toronto struck just 1:39 into the first when Connolly took advantage of a Capitals turnover inside their own zone with a wrister into the top-right corner.
Laich's goal came less than a minute later with a slap shot from the left point that found its way into the back of the net.
But Frattin's snap shot beat Vokoun with 44 seconds left in the first to make it a 2-1 game.
The Maple Leafs then exploded for four goals in the second period to put the game away.
Bozak started it with a power-play goal a little over a minute into the frame, and after Kessel beat Vokoun on Toronto's second shot of the period, Neuvirth replaced him between the pipes.
He didn't fare much better, though, as Lupul and Franson each netted a power- play goal within the final three minutes of the period.
Steckel raced down the ice for a shorthanded breakaway and put a puck under the crossbar at the 19:16 mark of the third to complete the rout.
