Iginla, Morrison help Flames edge Hurricanes

Dec 7, 2011 - 5:24 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla scored twice and Brendan Morrison added two goals with two assists as Calgary escaped with a 7-6 decision over Carolina at the Saddledome.

Iginla hit the empty net with 1:09 left in the contest to put the home team up by a comfortable 7-4 margin, but the Hurricanes responded with scores from Chad LaRose 37 seconds later and Eric Staal in the final five seconds of regulation.

Lee Stempniak, Rene Bourque and Mikael Backlund also tallied for the Flames, who won their fourth game in six thanks to a season-high for goals in one game.

Miikka Kiprusoff looked shaky at times but won despite allowing six goals on 34 shots.

Staal posted three points on two goals and a helper for the Hurricanes, losers of six straight contests. Jamie McBain and Tim Brent added a goal and assist each, while Jiri Tlusty scored on a penalty shot in defeat.

Cam Ward was shelled for six goals on 32 shots.

Iginla's eighth of the year, coming just over three minutes into the contest from a Morrison pass, put the Flames on the board. Stempniak made it 2-0 with 1:09 to play in the first, tapping in a loose puck from the top of the crease.

Morrison gave the Flames a 3-0 edge at the 42-second mark of the second, then Tlusty put Carolina on the board at 5:39 by forcing Kiprusoff to the ice before lifting a shot under the crossbar.

Brent scored with a wrister from the inner edge of the right circle with 6:44 left in the period, but Bourque made it 4-2 just 50 seconds later on a shot from the right wing.

Morrison made it 5-2 for Calgary with 1:22 gone in the third by gloving down an Iginla pass on the left wing and sliding a long shot by Ward.

McBain brought Carolina within 5-3 when his slick shot from the left circle found space inside the far post, but Backlund moved around a Hurricanes defender in the right circle and ripped a shot over Ward's shoulder power-play goal at 10:57.

But Staal blocked a Kiprusoff clear behind the Calgary net and stuffed home the rebound for a 6-4 game with 6:18 remaining.
