Ribeiro lifts Stars over Coyotes in shootout
Oct 11, 2011 - 5:09 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Mike Ribeiro scored the winner in the shootout as the Dallas Stars edged the Phoenix Coyotes, 2-1, at American Airlines Center.Ribeiro was the final shooter and he skated in on net and made the move to the forehand before roofing the puck past Mike Smith for the win.
Loui Eriksson scored late in the game for the Stars, who split a home-and-home set with Chicago to begin their campaign. Kari Lehtonen made 40 stops in the win.
"Every game counts and every point matters in this league," said Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan. "The shootout is an important part of the game and we'll take points any way we can get them."
Radim Vrbata scored the goal off assists from Shane Doan and Martin Hanzal for the Coyotes, who opened the season on Saturday with a loss to San Jose. Smith stopped 24 shots in defeat.
After a too many men on the ice call to Dallas, Phoenix won a faceoff at the right circle and went to work. From the left point, Doan blasted a shot on net that Hanzal got a piece of. Lehtonen was able to make the save, but it came to the front and Vrbata had the easy slam for the first goal of the game at the 5:55 mark of the third.
Dallas had three power play chances after the goal, but were unable to capitalize on any of them.
However, with Lehtonen pulled and time winding down, Sheldon Souray blasted a shot on net from the left point that Eriksson tipped past Smith to tie the game with 27.1 seconds left in regulation.
"We missed our coverage down low and it was just one of those shots that redirects into the net," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "I thought we deserved that win but if we keep playing like that we'll win games."
Lehtonen stopped 25 saves over the first two periods while Smith made 17 stops.
