Canucks cruise past Flames
Nov 2, 2011 - 5:22 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo came less than a minute away from a shutout, but stopped 28 shots to help Vancouver to a 5-1 win over Calgary at Scotiabank Saddledome.Alexander Edler had a goal and two assists while Cody Hodgson added a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have won their past two.
Alex Tanguay's goal with 31.6 seconds remaining spoiled the shutout, but the Flames had a two-game winning streak stopped.
Miikka Kiprusoff was tagged for all five goals on 18 shots and was pulled after two periods. Henrik Karlsson stopped all three shots he faced in the third.
Vancouver took the lead 7:57 in when Chris Higgins skated in on a breakaway and faked to the backhand before lifting the puck over Kiprusoff.
On the power play, Alexandre Burrows jammed the puck into the net from in front at the 13:42 mark, and Daniel Sedin added another power play goal with 18.3 seconds left in the first off a nice feed from his brother, Henrik, for a 3-0 lead.
"I thought we started the game fine, but the game got away from us after the first 10 minutes," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said.
Hodgson made it 4-0 with a slam dunk at the left side off a beautiful feed from Maxim Lapierre at the 3:47 mark, and Edler's third goal of the year with 8:17 to play in the second extended the margin further.
"We knew the second period had been an issue for us since the beginning of the year, the other teams have been able to outplay us, so we wanted to have a good second," Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said.
Tanguay spoiled Luongo's shutout bid with his second goal of the year in the final minute of the game.
