Backes lifts Blues past Jackets

Nov 28, 2011 - 1:58 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - David Backes scored a power-play goal in the third period to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Former Blue Jacket Kris Russell scored the other goal for St. Louis, which improved to 7-1-2 under Ken Hitchcock. Brian Elliott continued his stellar play between the pipes, recording 23 saves to up his record this season to 10-1-0.

Curtis Sanford stopped 27 shots for the Blue Jackets, who had registered at least a point in each of their past five games (3-0-2).

"We had a lot of chances to score and we didn't," said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. "They certainly capitalized on a couple mistakes we made."

Backes netted a tie-breaking goal at the 7:49 mark of the third period. Jason Arnott worked the puck down low to T.J. Oshie, who made a no-look pass that Backes converted for his ninth goal of the season.

Derek Dorsett beat Elliott on the breakaway to put Columbus on the board at 5:06 of the second period.

Dealt by the Blue Jackets earlier this month, Russell crashed the net and backhanded home a rebound to draw St. Louis even with eight seconds to go in the middle frame.

"It felt good to score that goal," Russell said.
