Wild use record-setting second period to beat Stars
Jan 22, 2012 - 5:32 AM St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Dany Heatley had a goal and two assists and the Minnesota Wild set a new franchise record during the second period of a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars.Devin Setoguchi posted a goal and an assist while Josh Harding made 23 stops to help the Wild win for just the third time in their past 10 games.
The Wild scored three times over a 59-second span in the second period to set a franchise record for the fastest three goals.
"Everybody played well out there tonight," said Harding. "We didn't have the best start, but we battled back and played hard. The young guys stepped up and played really well tonight."
Eric Nystrom and Philip Larsen scored for the Stars, who have dropped five straight. Kari Lehtonen gave up four goals on 19 shots in the loss.
"We just didn't get the bounces tonight," said Nystrom. "The game could have went either way, but in a matter of minutes everything went against us. They got some quick ones and that was it."
With Dallas holding a 2-1 lead, Minnesota began its three-goal onslaught at the 13:37 mark as Cal Clutterbuck got a pass down low and lifted a backhander into the net.
Just 14 seconds later, Chad Rau got the first goal of his career as he put a wraparound on net from the left side that was stopped and he stayed with it to jam in the rebound.
Moments after that, Jared Spurgeon sent a pass from the left wing over to the right circle where Heatley fired it back to the low left side for the one- timer off the stick of Kyle Brodziak to make it a 4-2 game.
Heatley scored 1:29 into the third for a three-goal cushion and Harding stopped seven shots to preserve the lead.
Nystrom scored the only goal of the first period with 1:22 left in the frame, but Setoguchi tied the contest at the 9:06 mark of the second with a power- play goal.
Larsen's first career goal came two minutes later when his slap shot from the high slot sailed into the net to give the Stars a 2-1 lead.
