Halak, Blues shut down Kings
Feb 4, 2012 - 4:49 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jaroslav Halak stopped all 22 shots he faced to post his fifth shutout of the season as St. Louis edged Los Angeles, 1-0, at Scottrade Center.Jamie Langenbrunner's second-period tally stood as the deciding goal for the Blues, who reached the 30-win plateau by stopping a two-game slide.
"You've got to get 100 points to make the playoffs and we knew that coming in," Langenbrunner said of the always-competitive Western Conference playoff picture. "If you win one you feel good about it and you move on. If you lose one you forget about it and move on. No one is going to win every game, but you've got to make sure you give yourself a chance every night."
Jonathan Quick made 32 saves for the Kings, whose two-game win streak came to an end.
Halak received the only support he needed at the 8:38 mark of the second period.
Matt D'Agostini fought past a check along the right-wing boards just inside the LA zone, then dished across to Langenbrunner for a successful one-timer from between the circles.
That was the only blemish on Quick's record as he stopped the other 12 St. Louis shots in the second. Halak needed to make eight saves in the middle 20 minutes and eight more in the third to preserve the winning margin.
Quick stopped 12 shots and Halak six in the first period.
"Down the stretch you see a lot of shootout games; a lot of overtime games, low-scoring games. Every point is so, so crucial," said Kings forward Jarret Stoll. "Being on the road we've got to find ways to simplify our game and give up a lot less and create more."
