Stajan lifts Flames over Sharks in OT

Mar 14, 2012 - 6:05 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Matt Stajan scored with just 40 seconds to play in overtime as the Calgary Flames took a big 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

With time winding down in the extra session, the Flames went the other way on a 2-on-1 break and Blake Comeau feathered a perfect pass from the slot over to the low left circle and Stajan buried the puck with a one-timer for the win.

Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist, and Sven Baertschi also scored for the Flames, who are on a four-game winning streak. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 29 shots.

"We are starting to come together now," said Iginla. "We've had a ton of injuries this year, but we're starting to get healthy and the young guys who have been filling in are still doing their job."

Calgary and San Jose now both have 78 points, but San Jose currently holds the eighth spot in the Western Conference thanks to one more win and one less game played. Los Angeles and Colorado also have 78 points each, but occupy the 10th and 11th spot, respectively, due to tiebreakers.

Logan Couture scored both goals for the Sharks, who have dropped six of seven. Antti Niemi allowed all three goals on 22 shots in the loss.

The Sharks took the lead just 53 seconds in when Couture was able to snap in a rebound off a Brent Burns shot.

The score stayed that way until the 5:46 mark of the second when Iginla sent a shot from a sharp angle at the left boards and Baertschi was at the left circle to bang home the rebound.

Iginla gave his team a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission as he one-timed a Mark Giordano pass from the top of the left circle for his 30th of the season.

San Jose tied the game on the power play just 1:22 into the third period when Patrick Marleau, sitting to the left of Kiprusoff, sent the puck to the slot where Couture one-timed it home for his 30th of the year.

"If I was going to summarize it real quick, our power play took us out of the game and then allowed us to come back in to the game," said San Jose head coach Todd McLellan.
