Flames try to stay hot against visiting Sharks

Mar 13, 2012 - 3:00 PM (Sports Network) - The Flames, and most notably Jarome Iginla and Curtis Glencross, seem to be getting hot at the right time.

Calgary looks to grab a share of the eighth spot in the Western Conference and jump past San Jose in the standings as it hosts the Sharks this evening seeking to match its longest winning streak of the season.

The Flames are on their first three-game winning streak since Jan. 7-12 and that has helped them stay in the hunt for a postseason spot. Calgary is currently tied for 10th in a tight Western Conference, one point behind ninth- place San Jose and two back of Colorado, which occupies the eighth spot and is idle tonight. The Flames also have two games in hand over the Avalanche.

Calgary will try to win a season-high four straight for the first time since Dec. 20-27 after picking up a big 4-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday. Iginla scored in the first period and assisted on Glencross' key tally during a three-goal third period.

Iginla has logged six goals and five assists over a six-game point streak, while Glencross has scored in seven straight games to give him a career-high 25 goals on the season. His goal-scoring streak is one off the club record held by Kent Nilsson (1983-84) and Gary Roberts (1992-93).

"It's been good. Like I said last game, I'm not really worried about my individual stuff right now. It's more about the two points at the end of the night and I'm just glad my goal tonight helped us get the win," said Glencross.

Playing in only his second career NHL game, Sven Baertschi scored his first goal and Olli Jokinen also tallied for the Flames, who got 24 saves from Miikka Kiprusoff.

Baertschi is just one of the players head coach Brent Sutter is counting on thanks to a host of injuries. Forwards Tim Jackman and Lance Bouma as well as defenseman TJ Brodie are all doubtful for tonight due to upper-body injuries, while forwards Mike Cammalleri (upper body) and Blake Comeau (shoulder) are questionable.

Calgary will try to take advantage of catching San Jose on the back end of consecutive games as the Sharks picked up their first victory of March with last night's 3-2 win at Edmonton.

San Jose had opened the month 0-3-2 and had lost 11 of 13 before getting goals from Torrey Mitchell, Joe Thornton and Logan Couture. The latter's tally was the game-winner and came 38 seconds into the third while on the power play.

Sharks head coach Todd McLellan talked about afterwards how his team secured the big two points.

"They managed the puck properly. We didn't give up much in and around our net. We played the way we're supposed to play," he said.

Antti Niemi made 20 saves for the Sharks, who close out a four-game road trip looking to win for only the third time in their past 11 away from San Jose.

The Sharks had won five straight over the Flames, including the first two encounters this season, before Calgary notched a 4-3 win at San Jose on Feb. 8. Jokinen capped his seventh career hat trick that night with the winner in the third period and Kiprusoff logged the 300th victory of his career with 34 saves.

San Jose has still won eight of the last 12 meetings overall as well as four of the past six in Calgary.
