Final
Montoya, Jets blank Senators
Feb 10, 2013 - 7:20 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Al Montoya stopped 33 shots to record his third career shutout and lead the Winnipeg Jets past the Ottawa Senators, 1-0, at Scotiabank Place.Alexei Ponikarovsky netted the game's lone goal for Winnipeg, which won for the second time in three games.
"We decided that we were going to play the right way from start to finish and play a full 60 minutes," Jets coach Claude Noel said. "We understood the value of having patience and playing the right way tonight and were able to close it out."
Ben Bishop made 36 saves in a losing effort for the Senators, who have dropped two straight and four of their last five overall.
The first two periods passed scoreless as Bishop made 28 saves and Montoya stopped 23 shots over that span.
The Jets were then able to break through 5:57 into the third period as a defensive zone turnover by Ottawa led to Ponikarovsky deflecting a Kyle Wellwood shot from the right point over the left shoulder of Bishop.
Montoya made that goal stand from there as he made 10 saves in the final period, including several during a late flurry after Ottawa pulled Bishop for an extra attacker.
"I didn't think we skated well at all," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "Once we got behind I thought we played with a little bit more urgency and drive, but until that point we were flat."
Game Notes
Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien missed his fifth straight game with a lower body injury ... Winnipeg defenseman Tobias Enstrom saw his eight-game point streak come to an end ... The Senators went 0-for-3 on the power play ... The Jets failed to score on their lone man advantage.
