Senators, Jets clash in Ottawa
Feb 9, 2013 - 4:22 PM (Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators continue a four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as they shoot for a second victory in as many meetings this season with the Winnipeg Jets. The Sens have split the first two games of their residency, beating the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday ahead of a 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes two nights later.
Daniel Alfredsson and Erik Karlsson scored for Ottawa and Craig Anderson made 23 saves, but Carolina's Cam Ward stopped 45 shots and Jay Harrison had the winner with 2:41 to play in overtime.
It marked Ottawa's third loss in four games, with all four games decided by a single goal. That includes a 1-0 setback at Carolina on Feb. 1.
"I thought it was a well-paced game. Ward made a ton of great saves. That was the difference in the game," said Senators head coach Paul MacLean.
The Sens and Jets opened the season against each other in Winnipeg on Jan. 19, with Ottawa notching a 4-1 win. Karlsson had a goal and an assist, while Anderson came up with 27 saves.
It marked the Senators fourth victory in their past five meetings with the Jets, but Winnipeg's lone win in that span was a 2-0 triumph in Ottawa on Jan. 16 of last season.
The Jets have lost four of their last five games overall and were bested 3-2 by the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Grant Clitsome's goal 3:46 into the third period had Winnipeg up by a goal, but Toronto scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart late in the third.
"We struggled a bit in our zone. Even against their fourth line, there was a point there where we struggled." Jets coach Claude Noel said. "Why we're like that, I'm not quite sure."
Ondrej Pavelec yielded three goals on just 18 shots, while Zach Redmond scored the first goal of his NHL career. The 24-year-old former seventh-round pick was skating in his fourth game and ripped a one-timer into the back of the net while shorthanded.
"Awesome," Redmond said of getting his first goal. "It's always a great thing to get out of the way and something you always dream of. I never thought it would come on the PK, but definitely happy to get the monkey off my back and get the first one out of the way."
Defenseman Tobias Enstrom had an assist in the loss to extend his point streak to eight games. He has two goals and 10 assists during that span.
