Iginla's late goal lifts Flames over Blues
Mar 25, 2013 - 3:41 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla scored the game-winning goal with 7:02 remaining to lift the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.Roman Cervenka added a pair of goals and Miikka Kiprusoff made 36 saves for the Flames, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
"Even though we lost our two-goal lead, everything was good on the bench and we knew that we had a chance, because Kipper had an answer for basically every shot they would throw at us," said Flames head coach Bob Hartley.
T.J. Oshie and Vladimir Sobotka tallied for the Blues, who had won four of their last five entering the contest.
"Too many opportunities that we worked to earn and didn't take advantage with the people on the power play," Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said. "If we continue to play good 5-on-5 hockey we'll be alright."
Jaroslav Halak, who posted a shutout against Edmonton on Friday, allowed all three goals on 17 shots.
Cervenka's wrister 11:13 into the opening period gave Calgary a 1-0 edge on the power play. Dennis Wideman sent the puck up ice to a wide-open Cervenka, who sent the disc over Halak's glove.
Cervenka added a second goal with 10:20 to play in the second. Mikael Backlund blocked the puck as St. Louis tried clear it out of its zone. Jiri Hudler recovered the loose puck and found Cervenka all lone by the net. Cervenka skated in front of the goal before flipping a backhander in the net for his fifth tally of the season.
Oshie got the Blues on the board with 3:20 left in the middle period. Oshie left the penalty box after sitting for an unsportsmanlike conduct call, stole the puck and blasted it past Kirpusoff.
Sobotka knotted it up early in the third period after banging home a rebound off an Andy McDonald shot.
Iginla, though, potted the game winner with an incredible breakaway goal. Iginla took a pass from Alex Tanguay and raced to the net. He was cut off in front of the goal by a Blues defender, but spun and sent the puck into the back of the net.
