Blues take on sliding Flames

Mar 24, 2013 - 3:17 PM (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Blues will aim for a fifth win in six games when they visit the sliding Calgary Flames for Sunday's battle at the Saddledome.

The Blues had a three-game winning streak halted Tuesday in Vancouver, but bounced back with Saturday's 3-0 triumph in Edmonton. The win allowed St. Louis to move into a tie with Los Angeles for fifth place in the Western Conference.

Jaroslav Halak posted his third shutout of the season with 19 saves on Saturday. It was also the goaltender's first victory since March 1.

"It's always good to get back in action in a game, especially coming here and winning the game. It's a big win for me and for the team," said Halak, who hadn't played since March 10. "We need to pick up our road games for sure, and we've got one more big game coming up before we go home."

Alexander Steen scored once and also had an assist, while Chris Stewart and T.J. Oshie added one goal apiece for the Blues, who improved to 9-6-1 on the road this season.

After closing a three-game road trip on Sunday, the Blues will play two straight in St. Louis, beginning with a rematch Tuesday against Edmonton.

The Flames enter Sunday's action tied for last in the Western Conference and they're currently seven points out of a playoff spot. Calgary hasn't helped its postseason chances recently, losing its last three in regulation and dropping six of eight overall.

All three of Calgary's consecutive losses came on the road, including Friday's rout in Columbus. The Blue Jackets slammed the Flames by a 5-1 score, dropping Calgary to 3-9-2 on the road this season.

Curtis Glencross scored the lone Calgary goal, while Miikka Kiprusoff allowed all five goals on 28 shots for the Flames, who have lost nine straight on the road.

"They're a team that works hard," Calgary defenseman Jay Bouwmeester said of Columbus. "Every time you come in here you know that. They haven't had a lot of success here but they always work hard and give you a tough game."

Calgary will play three of its next four games at the Saddledome, where the club is 8-5-2 this season.

The Blues recorded a 5-2 win at Calgary on Feb. 15, giving St. Louis wins in three straight and four of the last five meetings in this series. The Flames have dropped two in a row and five of the last eight encounters at home.
