Brind'Amour, Walker lead Hurricanes to fifth straight win

Dec 27, 2006 - 4:53 AM RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- After a recent slump, Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour is beginning to assert himself again.

Brind'Amour snapped a third-period tie and Justin Williams added his 18th goal of the season for the Hurricanes, who won their fifth consecutive game with a 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.

The team leader in points (41), Brind'Amour went 10 games without scoring a goal and sat out four other contests from November 18-December 19 before collecting three points against the New York Islanders on Friday. He added an assist Saturday against Florida.

Brind'Amour snapped a 1-1 tie just 50 seconds into the final session while Carolina was on a 4-on-3 power play. He recorded his 12th tally when Eric Staal's pass to the top of the crease deflected off his skate under goaltender Alex Auld's pads.

Scott Walker added an insurance goal with 7:45 remaining when he split a pair of defenders and lifted the puck under the crossbar for his 12th tally.

"It is a matter of work ethic," Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward said. "We're coming mentally prepared and willing to sacrifice. Before the (recent five-game losing) streak began, we weren't very happy with the way things were going. We weren't as sharp as we could be and now since we had (a team) meeting, we've been sharp."

Nathan Horton scored his second goal of the game with 4:11 left for the Panthers before Cory Stillman sealed the win with an empty-net tally with 41 seconds to go.

"We showed up and played hard in the third," Carolina coach Peter Laviolettte said. "You're messing with fire and rolling the dice when you're not at your best and playing your best. We came out with purpose in the third."

Williams tied the game, 1-1, late in the second period and netminder Cam Ward made 25 saves for Carolina.

"I was trying to create a spark because at the time, we needed it," Williams said. "It was 1-0 and they were taking the play to us and controlling the play. Sometimes you get opportunities to score and they go in and sometimes they don't (go in)."

Auld stopped 26 shots and fell to 6-11-4 for Florida, which has lost two of the three meetings against Carolina this season.

"Odd-man rushes obviously hurt us tonight," Auld said. "Their counter is so quick. You play solid for the most part and (when you make) a turnover or a mistake, they end up in your net. They're so dangerous."

"We've got to have better discipline," Panthers coach Jacques Martin said. "They put us in the hole and I thought we had a pretty good second period. ... A mistake on a faceoff gave them the first goal and then we had a 4-on-3. That's how we lost the last game so we have to be better disciplined."
