Heatley helps Senators down Bruins
Jan 10, 2007 - 4:57 AM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Dany Heatley did his part to keep the Ottawa Senators rolling.Heatley had a goal and an assist to lead the Senators over the Boston Bruins, 5-2, for their seventh victory in their last nine games.
Trailing 2-0, the Senators took the game over with three goals in a span of 10:03 in the third period.
"I'm not surprised by what happened in the third," Boston coach Dave Lewis said. "I figured they were going to put the pressure on. We held, we held, we held and finally it sort of broke down a little bit. A couple of turnovers, just little plays that they capitalized on."
"Not a bad third period," Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson said. "We needed that one. A slow start from us, but that was a pretty huge third and it was nice to get the win, there's no question. There was a good atmosphere in the dressing room after the second. The guys wanted to come out and give it everything we had, and we were able to put some of it to them right away."
Heatley scored his 26th goal of the season at 5:43 of the third period to tie the game, 2-2. Heatley blasted a shot from the left faceoff dot past goaltender Tim Thomas before he assisted on Daniel Alfredsson's go-ahead goal at 12:25 of the third period to give Ottawa a 3-2 advantage.
"We're having fun right now with the new line," Heatley said. "We're having success. We're skating well and moving the puck well and things are going good. We're using each other, we're supporting each other very well, and it's making the game easier for us.
"There's always either (Chris) Kelly or Alfie (Alfredsson) pulling it (the puck) to me and I think that's the key. We're moving it."
Mike Comrie, Patrick Eaves and Peter Schaefer also scored in the third period for Ottawa, which beat Boston for the first time this season after dropping the first three meetings between the clubs.
"We lost some guys, but Mike Comrie came in and he's got some great offensive abilities, and he broke the goose egg in there for us tonight," said Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery, who finished with 23 saves. "That was big for us to get our first goal and seeing the energy build off that."
Marco Sturm scored on a penalty shot for Boston while defenseman Paul Mara had the other Bruins goal.
"We've got two really young defensemen, one in his first game, and we relied on them a lot," said Thomas, who finished with 31 saves. "They did a fine job and that's the end of that. The whole team seemed to have some breakdowns in the third. We got a little bit more nervous between the second and third periods."
Bruins rookie center Phil Kessel, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer on December 9 and underwent surgery on December 12, returned to the Boston lineup. Kessel, who was the fifth overall selection in last summer's draft, played 10:04 and had one shot on goal.
