Weight's two late goals help Blues beat Canucks

Feb 28, 2007 - 6:05 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- It had been a while, but Doug Weight showed his St. Louis Blues teammates he remembers how to put the puck in the net.

Weight scored two third-period goals as the Blues overcame a controversial call to defeat the Vancouver Canucks, 3-1.

Rookie David Backes scored the first goal of the game and goaltender Curtis Sanford made 25 saves for St. Louis, which has won five of six.

"I'm quite happy to make the most of my opportunities, but as Coach says, every game is a new game," Backes said. "We need to keep winning. We can still make the playoffs."

With 10:39 remaining, Weight received a pass from Petr Cajanek at the Vancouver blue line, skated in and wristed a shot past netminder Roberto Luongo to put the Blues up, 2-1, and give him his first tally since January 16, a span of 18 games.

"We tired them out in our zone for about 40 seconds and then Petr made a great play," Weight said. "With Luongo, I usually deke, but this time I shot high."

The 15-year veteran scored again with 2:14 left when, on the power play, he blasted a shot that ricocheted off a Vancouver defender and between the pads of Luongo for a two-goal advantage.

Controversy occurred when Daniel Sedin tied the game at 1-1 with seven minutes left in the second period. He fired a shot that tucked underneath Sanford, who was prone on the ice in front of the net.

"You saw me put my hands up right away," Sedin said. "I knew it was in how could it not have? Sanford is a terrific goaltender, but I got him on that one."

The officials checked the replay to see if the puck had crossed the goal line and determined that when Sanford stood up after the whistle stopped play, the puck was over the line.

"I will have to see a replay but it was hard to tell if it crossed the line," Sanford said. "It was underneath me. I was just trying to make the save and hoping it was not across the line."

"The officials felt it was a goal," Blues coach Andy Murray added. "The referee did not see it and so they called Toronto. There is not much you can say."

That was all Sanford allowed for St. Louis, which has won eight of 11 here against Vancouver.

Luongo made 17 saves for the Canucks, who have lost two straight following a six-game winning streak.

"We did not make a lot of mistakes but the ones that we made ended up in the back of the net," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. "They are an improved team, but even on the road, this is a game we have to win."
