Conroy helps Flames win fifth straight, defeat Blues

Mar 7, 2007 - 8:08 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- With the Calgary Flames trailing early, they looked to Craig Conroy for a spark.

Conroy scored twice and had an assist as the Flames posted a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the St. Louis Blues.

Calgary, which is seventh in the Western Conference and two points ahead of eighth-place Minnesota, plays the league-leading Nashville Predators on Thursday.

"Getting two points on the road is huge," Conroy said. "We are talking about the road trip, how important it is to play well, especially now. We come back and won one in Edmonton, but you want to build on that and to lose tonight would have set us back. Now we can build on that and go against a real good Nashville team next."

Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist and captain Jarome Iginla had three assists for Calgary, which has won five straight overall and two in a row on the road.

After Tanguay cut the Blues' lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal with 46 seconds left in the second period, Conroy tallied just 36 seconds into the third session to knot the game at 2-2 on the power play.

"You get that power-play goal, there's a lot of life," Conroy said. "You feel, 'OK, we've kind of broke his bubble, and let's go get another one.'"

St. Louis coach Andy Murray was not pleased with his club's execution on the tying tally.

"To be honest with you, I don't think we deserved to win," he said. "We got what we deserved. On that (tying) goal, Eric Brewer was up front and needed to be harder on the puck. Lee Stempniak was caught flat-footed by teammates being out of position."

Conroy helped give the Flames the lead when, with St. Louis on the man advantage and in the Calgary zone, he stole a pass along the boards and fed Wayne Primeau, who skated up the ice and deked Curtis Sanford before backhanding a shot past the goaltender for a 3-2 advantage.

"I was eavesdropping a little bit and just thought I would try it," Primeau said of his deke. "It is a good feeling to score to help the team win. That is the biggest bonus."

Conroy tallied his 10th goal of the season with 3:20 remaining to help Calgary stay within two points of Vancouver for first place in the Northwest Division.

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 17 shots and is now 6-0-1 in his last seven games vs. St. Louis.

"Kipper made some huge saves to get our feet under us," Iginla said. "We starting drawing some power plays and it (the momentum) started shifting."

Petr Cajanek and Radek Dvorak had first-period goals and Sanford made 17 saves for the Blues, who had a four-game home winning streak snapped.

Dvorak gave the Blues a 2-0 lead at 9:36 of the first period with his ninth goal this season.

"Eric (Brewer) did a great job keeping the puck moving around the zone," Dvorak said. "When I got it, the traffic looked right so I let it go. The goalie seemed very surprised."
