Two quick goals early in third lead Sharks to victory

Mar 31, 2007 - 6:42 AM
SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- The San Jose Sharks toyed around with the Phoenix Coyotes for two periods before getting serious in the third.

Defenseman Scott Hannan and Jonathan Cheechoo scored 68 seconds apart early in the third period as the Sharks posted a 4-2 triumph over the Coyotes.

Patrick Rissmiller had a goal and an assist and Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves for the Sharks (48-26-4), who remained tied for second in the Pacific Division with the Dallas Stars (47-24-6), four points back of the idle Anaheim Ducks (46-20-12). San Jose and Dallas also share fifth place in the Western Conference.

"You look at the teams that are going to be in the playoffs from our conference, and pretty much everyone will have 100 points, most likely," Cheechoo said. "There's still some games left, and we hope to catch Anaheim. You can't afford to take a single night off in the league if you want to be in the playoffs."

"I'm going to guess all eight teams that qualify will have 100 points," San Jose coach Ron Wilson said. "It's pretty amazing. So that's the line that you've got to shoot for, going forward, if you want to make the playoffs. That's what we have to look at, 95 points or more. If you don't have 95 points, you've had a bad year."

The Sharks have 100 points with four games left, four shy of the club record set in 2003-04.

San Jose has outscored Phoenix, 18-6, in its five straight triumphs in the season series.

Leading 2-1, the Sharks broke open the game when Hannan blasted a shot from the left faceoff dot over goaltender Curtis Joseph's glove at 4:04 of the third period.

"I'm not going to say I faked the goalie out, but I kind of put it up and it went in, just like we do it in practice," Hannan said.

Just over a minute later, Cheechoo increased the advantage to 4-1 by snapping a shot from the bottom of the right circle past Joseph.

"I faked the shot and Cujo went down a little bit," the reigning Maurice Richard Trophy winner said. "I tried to make him make the first move, and it showed a little room up on top. That's where I shot it."

"Cheechoo had a little bit of time, he pump-faked, got it in his feet and he just went right off the bar and in," Joseph said. "He's a pretty good player."

Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff also tallied for San Jose, which has won eight of its last 10 games.

Fredrik Sjostrom and Steven Reinprecht scored for the Coyotes, who have lost four in a row and 13 of 15.

"We played pretty solid in the sense that we played against a good hockey club," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "Our effort was pretty strong, but the outcome obviously wasn't what we hoped for."

The Coyotes hurt themselves with an inept 1-for-9 performance on the power play.

"We're not very good, simple as that," Gretzky said. "We don't shoot the puck often in opportune times, and if you don't shoot the puck and crash the net, you're not going to score, and that's what we need to do more of."

"Guys have done a pretty good job on the penalty kill, and Nabby bailed us out when we made some breakdowns and didn't get pucks out," San Jose's Mike Grier said. "He was there for us. It was a good job for us, penalty killing-wise."

Despite the solid performance while down a skater, Wilson was not pleased with his club's discipline.

"You don't want to be killing nine penalties, especially five or six awful penalties, when people can get hurt blocking shots," he said.
