Lindholm keeps Ducks rolling in win over Coyotes
Jan 12, 2014 - 6:30 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Hampus Lindholm had two goals as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-3, at Jobing.com Arena.Sami Vatanen, Ryan Getzlaf, and Dustin Penner all lit the lamp in Anaheim's sixth straight victory. Mathieu Perreault tallied three assists and Corey Perry added two helpers as the Ducks completed a five-game sweep of the Coyotes this season.
Jonas Hiller turned aside 28 shots to win his 13th straight game in net. The last goaltender to win 13 straight was Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings in 1996.
"It's a great thing, but I'm more excited about winning. The personal things are the cherry on the cake," Hiller said. " We talked about wanting to win the whole series, every game. We might face [Phoenix] in the playoffs, and we want to make sure we have the confidence against them."
Martin Hanzal, Lauri Korpikoski, and Mike Ribeiro supplied the goals for Phoenix. Radim Vrbata had three assists for the Coyotes, who have dropped four of their last five.
"Right now, we're not very good, and we haven't been very good for a while," Phoenix captain Shane Doan said. "We've been fooling ourselves with finding ways to come back and get points."
Thomas Greiss allowed four goals on 23 shots before being pulled in the second, while Mike Smith stopped 6-of-7 shots in relief.
Hanzal skated up the left side and dished a pass to Vrbata out in front. Korpikoski gathered the puck in the middle and fired a shot on net. Hiller made the first save, but failed to control the rebound, allowing Korpikoski to wrist the puck into the net 3:57 into the first.
Lindholm wristed home a rebound to tie the game close to nine minutes later.
Vatanen scored his fifth on a shot from the blue line that squeaked through the pads of Greiss to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead 5:44 into the second.
Anaheim took a 3-1 lead 9:11 into the second. Penner slapped home a one-timer on a dish from Perry for his 11th of the season.
Getzlaf tallied his 23rd of the season on a backhand less than two minutes later, forcing Greiss out of the game.
The Ducks extended their lead to four goals when Lindholm's wrister beat Smith and hit the camera inside the net six minutes into the third.
Phoenix did not go away. Vrbata fired a shot that went off the right skate of Hanzal and past Hiller to make it a 5-2 game with under nine minutes to play and Ribeiro added another after taking a backhand pass from Vrbata inside the crease with 1:50 to go.
