Red-hot Ducks shoot for season sweep of Coyotes
Jan 11, 2014 - 4:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Anaheim Ducks will try to stretch their current winning streak to six straight games with a season series sweep of the Phoenix Coyotes as the two Pacific Division rivals clash on Saturday night. The Ducks have won 15 of their last 16 games and lead both the NHL and division with 71 points. That puts them 20 points ahead of the struggling Coyotes, who sit ninth overall in the Western Conference.
Anaheim has won all four of its meetings with Phoenix this season, two beyond regulation, and took the lone previous game in Arizona by a 4-2 margin on Nov. 23. The Ducks picked up a 3-2 overtime win at home when the clubs last met on Dec. 28.
Phoenix has still managed to win nine of the past 13 at home in this series.
The Ducks didn't let falling into a two-goal deficit hold them back on Thursday in Nashville as they scored four second-period goals in a 4-3 win. Teemu Selanne capped the comeback with the winning goal that came with 1:08 to play in the middle frame.
Ryan Getzlaf scored twice and added an assist, while Corey Perry added a goal as Anaheim scored at least four goals in a club-record fifth straight game.
Perry has scored in three straight games, giving him 25 goals on the season, while Getzlaf has notched 52 points through 43 games.
"It's just the confidence," Selanne said of his team's ability to battle back. "We were down two, but it didn't bother us. We just kept coming."
Frederik Andersen made 23 saves in the start over Jonas Hiller, who has won a franchise-record 12 straight games but got a night off on Thursday.
Hiller is likely to draw the start for the Ducks, who host Detroit on Sunday, and is 19-6-3 with a 2.45 goals against average in his career when facing Phoenix.
The Coyotes conclude a six-game homestand tonight and fell to 2-3-0 on the residency with Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Mike Smith allowed three goals on 27 shots.
"This was a game we knew it was going to be tight-checking and every play counts, and we didn't get it done," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said.
Mikkel Boedker scored the Coyotes' lone goal, his team-leading and career-high 14th of the season. He has a goal in three straight and four of his past five.
Boedker is pointless in four games versus the Ducks this season while posting a minus-7 rating, while Smith is 8-5-2 with a 2.90 GAA lifetime against the club.
Getzlaf has three points in the four meetings with the Coyotes this season and has 14 goals and 52 points in 50 career encounters.
