Sabres beat Kings in SO for first home win
Nov 13, 2013 - 5:42 AM Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Moulson and Tyler Ennis both scored in the shootout to help the Buffalo Sabres notch their first home win of the season with a 3-2 decision over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.Cody Hodgson scored a pair of goals in regulation, Moulson had two assists and Ennis added a helper for the Sabres, who have had three of their four wins this season come via the shootout. Ryan Miller made 43 saves in the win.
"I thought we were working together in the zone. These are the kind of games where teams hang around and we need to do the little things to win. We did that tonight," said Miller.
Justin Williams and Dwight King had one goal apiece for the Kings, who lost goaltender Jonathan Quick late in overtime.
Quick, who had made 15 saves, exited in the final minute of the bonus period with an apparent groin injury.
Moulson beat Ben Scrivens through the five hole, and Miller stoned a pair of Kings shooters before Ennis potted the game-winner. Ennis got Scrivens to lean to his left before cutting back over to the opposite side. Scrivens was unable to recover in time and Ennis made him pay.
Hodgson's second goal of the game, a power play marker 4:26 into the final session, put Buffalo ahead. Hodgson skated in down the right side and fired a pass across to Moulson, who quickly sent the disc to Ennis in front of the net. Ennis then dropped a pass back to Hodgson, who stuffed the puck home on the backhand.
Los Angeles tied the game with just over 3 1/2 minutes remaining. Tyler Toffoli fired a shot from the slot, but it was deflected by a Buffalo defenseman. King, though, batted the puck out of the air and into the net to forge a 2-2 deadlock.
The Sabres had a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation. On a 2-on-1 break, Steve Ott managed to draw in a defender, leaving Moulson wide open inside the left circle. Ott sent a quick pass to Moulson as he crashed to the net, but the former Islander was unable to stuff the puck home as Quick was able to poke it away and preserve the tie.
Williams' tip in 1:17 into the game opened up the scoring, and Hodgson scored at the 12:46 mark of the second to tie the game at 1-1.
"I think we just came out and didn't capitalize on our chances early, and they stayed in the game, and obviously they won," said Toffoli.
