Flames top Jets in shootout
Nov 19, 2013 - 6:52 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Monahan scored in the eighth round of the shootout as the Calgary Flames took a 5-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.Mike Cammalleri and TJ Brodie posted a goal and an assist, while Lance Bouma and Jiri Hudler scored for the Flames, who snapped a six-game skid. Reto Berra posted 43 stops for the win.
"I think that they're charging the fans to leave the building, because if that one was not exciting for them it sure was for me," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "We made it interesting, we made it tough on us, but at the end we found a way to win, so big two points."
Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little had a goal and an assist with Olli Jokinen and Michael Frolik lighting the lamp for the Jets, who have dropped their past two. Al Montoya stopped 29 shots in the loss.
"It was a very strange game," said Winnipeg head coach Claude Noel. "I thought that either team could have won at any time. We chased the game, not only from the goals standpoint but I thought it was pretty wild in a lot of ways. I think either team could have got the two, we got the one. We'll take the one. It's not ideal but that's what we'll take."
Byfuglien had been stopped by Berra before Monahan flew in and buried a wrister for the winner on his first career shootout attempt.
Calgary held a 4-3 lead with 3:26 to play after Hudler scored on a slap shot from the right boards that hit off a Winnipeg player in front.
Winnipeg, though, sent the game to overtime with the goalie pulled and 5.6 seconds to play as Evander Kane blasted a shot from the right boards that was stopped, but the rebound kicked out to the left circle where Little buried it for his 12th of the year.
After a scoreless first period, Cammalleri scored the game's first goal at 9:01 of the second on the power play, but Winnipeg got the goal back two minutes later thanks to Frolik's fifth of the season.
Brodie scored with 4:36 left in the second period to give the Flames a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
At 8:16 of the third, the Jets made it a 2-2 game as Jokinen's simple shot from the left wing went through a screen and past Berra.
Calgary again took the lead three minutes later while shorthanded as Matt Stajan skated down the right side and cut to the middle before slipping a slick pass down low to Bouma, who swept the puck in from the left side.
The Jets, though, again rallied as Byfuglien blasted a slap shot from the right circle that was blocked, but he picked up his own rebound and buried his second chance for his fifth of the season.
