Flames make first trip to Winnipeg since 1996

Nov 18, 2013 - 3:30 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Aiming for their first victory in two weeks, the Calgary Flames will visit the city of Winnipeg for the first time in over 17 years as they battle the Jets on Monday night.

The Flames are in the midst of a six-game slide (0-5-1), their longest losing streak since an 0-6-3 skid from Jan. 11-28, 2010. They haven't won since Nov. 3 in Chicago and most recently went winless on a three-game homestand.

Calgary will hope to change its luck in Winnipeg, where it has not played since facing the original Jets on April 6, 1996. The Flames are one of two Canadian teams that have not played in Winnipeg since the Atlanta Thrashers relocated before the 2011-12 season. The Vancouver Canucks are the other.

The Flames have won three straight over the Jets franchise and had lost six in a row on the road in this series before a victory in Atlanta on Feb. 3, 2011.

Calgary finished its homestand with a 4-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, yielding all four goals in the third period. Rookie Reto Berra gave up three of those on 23 shots faced total.

Sean Monahan and Dennis Wideman had the goals for the Flames.

"We gave them two goals out of three. After 40 minutes, I felt that we gave them nothing. We were playing our style. The first goal and third goal, there is only one word for those two goals -- awful," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley.

The rookie Monahan notched his eighth goal in the season and is looking to return to his early-season form. He notched six goals and 10 points in 12 games last month, but has just two goals and an assist in eight November contests.

The Jets will try to rebound tonight after having a four-game win streak halted last night in Minnesota. They lost a 2-1 decision, giving up the winning goal with 3:12 left to play.

Dustin Byfuglien had tied the game with his fourth goal of the season just 54 seconds into the third frame. Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves in defeat.

"It was a really tough game to lose because I thought our guys were very engaged in the game and really wanted to have a good outcome," said Winnipeg coach Claude Noel, whose club was without defenseman Zach Bogosian due to a strained groin.

The Jets will open a three-game homestand tonight and have won their past four as the host.

Pavelec has lost both of his previous career starts versus the Flames, posting a 4.12 goals against average, while backup Al Montoya, who has not started since Nov. 6, has never faced them.
