Ramo, Flames shut out Devils

Apr 8, 2014 - 4:03 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Karri Ramo made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season to help the Calgary Flames deal the New Jersey Devils a crippling 1-0 loss on Monday.

The defeat was a stinging blow to New Jersey's playoff hopes, as the team is three points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final wild card spot. New Jersey has just three games left, while Columbus has four.

"We're at the mercy of games like this because our margin of error is very small," said New Jersey head coach Peter DeBoer. "We're still alive here, have to get ready and cross our fingers that we get some help."

Mark Giordano scored the only goal of the game for the Flames, who have won three straight for the first start since a five-game run from Jan. 22-Feb. 1.

"It was a tough game and they were in our zone for a lot of time," said Ramo. "But we got the one goal and we're able to make their life harder."

Cory Schneider gave up one goal on 22 shots. for the Devils, who had won three of four coming into the game.

The only goal of this game came just 23 seconds into the final period with Calgary on the power play.

A dump in wrapped around the boards to the left side by Matt Cammalleri and Jiri Hudler picked it up, firing a pass to the high slot where Giordano one- timed a knuckler into the back of the net.

New Jersey got pressure late with the goalie pulled, but Ramo made a nice stop on a Michael Ryder shot from the low right side, and Jaromir Jagr's wraparound from the left side went just wide of the net in the final seconds.

"It just wasn't our night," said Jagr. "We just couldn't score today and for whatever reason it was a perfect game by him (Ramo)."

Ryan Carter appeared to have a goal with 1:26 to play in the first period as he got a deflected shot into the net, but it was waived off on the ice as it was ruled that he kicked it in, and the replay upheld the call.

Ramo turned away 10 shots in the second period, while Schneider made nine saves in the frame to send it to the final period scoreless.
