Carolina clips Colorado, ends Avs' road streak
Nov 13, 2013 - 4:54 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Dwyer's goal less than a minute into the second period proved to be the game-winner, as the Carolina Hurricanes handed the Colorado Avalanche their first road loss of the season with a 2-1 triumph on Tuesday at PNC Arena.Jordan Staal notched a goal and an assist, Nathan Gerbe added a pair of helpers, and Justin Peters posted 33 saves to send Carolina to its third win in four tries.
Paul Stastny scored the lone Colorado goal, while Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 shots for the Avalanche, who had won a franchise record-tying six straight road games to open the season.
"I thought we played well enough to win tonight, but unfortunately it was not on our side," Colorado coach Patrick Roy said.
Staal opened the scoring with just over seven minutes left in the first when he recovered a rebound between the circles and backhanded the puck past Varlamov for a 1-0 lead at 12:47.
Carolina doubled its cushion just 26 seconds into the middle stanza when Gerbe feathered a pass from the low left side to the front of the net for a cutting Dwyer, who redirected the disc past Varlamov to make it 2-0.
Colorado cut the lead in half on the power play late in the second after Radek Dvorak was whistled for hooking at 13:54.
With the Avs working in the Carolina zone, Nathan MacKinnon fired a shot from the right circle that snuck through Peters and trickled to the low right side, where Stastny tapped the disc home to make it 2-1 at 14:34.
The Avalanche peppered Peters with 10 shots over the final 20 minutes, but the 27-year-old netminder turned away all comers to keep Carolina in front.
"The guys just beared down," Peters said of the team hanging on to the one- goal lead. "A couple big blocks, a couple big chips out, some unselfish plays just to get the puck out and kill the clock. It was nice to see the boys get rewarded."
