Avalanche put perfect road record on line vs. 'Canes

Nov 12, 2013 - 4:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The powerful Colorado Avalanche will try to stay perfect on the road when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes for Tuesday's battle at PNC Arena.

The Avalanche are off to a 14-2-0 start to the season, winning 14 of their first 16 games for the first time in franchise history.

The historic start includes a franchise record-tying six-game road winning streak to begin a season and Colorado can match the club mark for longest road winning streak at any point in a season with another victory on Tuesday. The Avs won seven straight as the guest from Jan. 10-Feb. 7, 1999.

Colorado, however, has lost in its last three trips to Raleigh, although tonight's test is the Avs' first stop in North Carolina since Dec. 3, 2010, when the Hurricanes recorded a 2-1 overtime victory.

The Avs have claimed two straight in this series overall and are 3-1-1 over the past five encounters against Carolina.

Colorado recently wrapped a 3-1-0 homestand with Sunday's 4-1 triumph against the Washington Capitals. Gabriel Landeskog registered a goal and an assist to help the Avalanche win for the eighth time in nine games.

Nick Holden notched his first career goal, while PA Parenteau and Patrick Bordeleau also lit the lamp for the Avalanche. Semyon Varlamov, who spent his first three seasons with Washington, turned aside 33 shots in the triumph.

"It was great, especially against my old team," said Varlamov, who played for the Capitals from 2008-11. "It's always tough to play against Washington. They have so many good players."

Colorado is kicking off a brief two-game swing tonight and also will visit St. Louis on Thursday.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, are playing the fourth portion of a five-game homestand on Tuesday and are 2-0-1 on the residency so far. The lone loss came in Carolina's last outing, as visiting Minnesota recorded a 3-2 shootout win at PNC Arena.

Ryan Murphy and Jiri Tlusty scored in regulation for Carolina, while Justin Peters allowed two goals on 30 shots in the setback.

"We played a really solid game, I thought, from start to finish. It was a lot of fun to be apart of out there. I just wish I could have gotten one of those shootout goals to give us a chance," said Peters.

The loss dropped Carolina's home record to 3-3-4 this season. The 'Canes are set to complete this homestand in Friday's test against the Anaheim Ducks.

Although No. 1 goaltender Cam Ward recently returned to practice, he is still not ready to suit up for game action, meaning Peters will get an eighth straight start in net on Tuesday. Ward has been sidelined with a lower-body injury since Oct. 24.

Peters lost his first five decisions this season, but is 2-0-1 with a .963 save percentage over his last three outings.
