Stars hand Sharks 1st loss in shootout

Oct 18, 2013 - 5:00 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Chiasson tallied the game-winner in the shootout and the Dallas Stars handed the San Jose Sharks their first loss of the season with a 4-3 victory on Thursday.

After the first two shooters for both teams were turned away, Chiasson skated in with a full head of steam, cut back to the right at the last second and hammered one off the post and in.

"When coach told me I was going third (in the shootout), I just took a couple of deep breaths and these are the situations you want to be in as a player," Chiasson said.

Dan Ellis stoned the next shooter to secure the win.

Tyler Seguin, Cody Eakin and Trevor Daley scored in regulation for the Stars, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Ellis finished with 32 saves in the win.

Patrick Marleau, Tyler Kennedy and Matthew Nieto scored for the Sharks, who had won their first six games of the season.

"We are disappointed we didn't get the two points but we probably didn't play well enough," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan admitted.

San Jose led 2-1 after the first 20 minutes.

Kennedy opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal just nine seconds into the game. Kennedy controlled the puck off the faceoff, skated into the Dallas zone then fired a wrister from the right wing to make it 1-0.

Seguin knotted things up 16 1/2 minutes later after tapping home a rebound.

Nieto's slap shot with 2:08 to go in the opening frame gave the Sharks a 2-1 edge.

Daley tallied 1:53 into the second to tie the game once again. After Eakin's shot was turned away, Daley was there to clean up the miss for his first goal of the season.

Marleau's wraparound goal with 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the second session put the Sharks ahead 3-2, but Eakin tied the game 28 seconds later with a snap shot in front of the goal.
