Stars shoot past Kings

Jan 1, 2014 - 7:29 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Seguin and Erik Cole scored in the second period, and Dallas clipped Los Angeles, 3-2, at American Airlines Center.

Cole added a first-period marker and Kari Lehtonen came up with 23 saves for the Stars, winners in five of their last seven outings.

"We were as solid as we could be," said Dallas head coach Lindy Ruff. "You are going to have to give us some opportunities. I think we gave up one other one where they hit the post but I thought we still played and moved the puck well."

Ben Scrivens stopped 29 shots for the Kings, who received goals from Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar in their fourth straight loss.

"I thought we played really well, we got a little bit of a bad break on the second goal and we're not scoring any goals right now," said Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter. "We've played well enough to win, other than the game before Christmas, we easily could've won the last three. That's the way it goes."

Dallas took control in the second frame, racking up an 11-6 shot advantage and taking a 3-1 lead on tallies by Seguin on the power play and Cole at even strength.

Seguin put his club on top to stay at 12:13 of the middle frame, when he played an Alex Chiasson carom off the back boards and beat Scrivens from the right side.

It was a two-goal margin at 15:16 as Cole potted his second of the contest, a high shot from a sharp angle on the left wing.

Kopitar struck just 65 seconds into the third, picking the puck out of Jamie Benn's skates and firing home from the left circle.

Lehtonen only had to face four more LA shots for the duration, and no quality chances with Scrivens on the bench in the final minute.

The clubs exchanged power-play goals in the first 20 minutes. Carter gave Los Angeles the lead at 12:23, then Cole equalized for the hosts at 15:58.
