Kings down Lightning for fourth straight win
Nov 20, 2013 - 7:00 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Anze Kopitar, Justin Williams and Matt Frattin each posted a goal and an assist as the Los Angeles Kings took a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.Dustin Brown and Dwight King each scored, while Ben Scrivens stopped 19 shots for the Kings, who have won four straight.
Victor Hedman had a goal and an assist and Valtteri Filppula scored the other goal for the Lightning, who have lost the first two games of a four-game road trip. Ben Bishop gave up all five goals on 31 shots in the loss.
"I can't sit here and say our guys didn't try, because we tried," said Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper. "We've just hit a little bit of a rut, where our goalie was making saves and we were tipping pucks in and the pucks were going in for us, they're not going in for us anymore. Everything evens itself out, and I look to see work ethic. They tried, and they did a lot of good things out there tonight, we just didn't get any bounces and it's kind of being going like that for the last couple of games."
LA got on the board at 14:58 of the first period as Drew Doughty skated in the right side and left a drop pass from Kopitar, who snapped a shot off the post and in.
A simple shot from Frattin along the right boards during a Kings power play two minutes later made it a 2-0 game.
At 2:38 of the second period, Los Angeles added to its lead on William's eighth of the season, a backhand from the right side during a sequence in front of the net started by Doughty.
King scored shorthanded at 15:08 of the second period when Linden Vey picked off a wraparound at the right boards and set it on net, with King tipping it in for a 4-0 lead.
A bit later, the Lightning finally got on the board as Hedman fired a pass from the left point over to the right circle for a one-timer by Filppula for a 4-1 contest.
That goal broke a shutout streak of 191 minutes, 19 seconds for Scrivens.
"I want to win more than I want shutouts," said Scrivens. "I am happy that we won. Guys scored some big goals for us, so that is the most important thing. That should be the story tonight."
Brown got the goal back, though, less than a minute later as a bad clear saw Frattin pick off the puck and dish it down to Brown, who quickly flung it past a surprised Bishop.
Hedman scored at 1:22 of the third period, but the Lightning were unable to cut any further into their deficit.
