Scrivens, Kings carry shutout streak into home test vs. Bolts
Nov 19, 2013 - 4:10 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - One shutout just never seems to be enough for Los Angeles Kings goaltender Ben Scrivens. The Kings return home from an East Coast trip off back-to-back whitewashes by Scrivens and they aim for a fourth straight victory in Tuesday's clash with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Kings lost No. 1 goaltender Jonathan Quick to a Grade 2 groin strain in the first game of the swing in Buffalo. Though Scrivens came on and took the loss in the shootout, he rebounded to record wins over the New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers to finish off the trip.
Scrivens followed up a 26-save effort versus the Devils by stopping all 37 shots faced versus the Rangers. He improved to 3-0-1 with a 0.66 goals against average and .977 save percentage on the trek and is 4-1-1 with a 1.24 GAA and league-leading three shutouts in eight games (5 starts) this season.
Named the NHL's First Star for the previous week on Monday, Scrivens returns to Los Angeles with a shutout streak of 155 minutes and two seconds. That surpasses his streak of 151:46 of scoreless hockey with the Toronto Maple Leafs a season ago, a span that also included back-to-back shutouts.
"He just had to be solid," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said of Scrivens after Sunday's win.
Tyler Toffoli made sure Scrivens' effort resulted in a win, scoring 1:23 into the second period. It was his fourth goal and eighth point in seven games this season.
Los Angeles has won a season high-tying three straight overall and is 5-0-1 in its past six.
The Lightning are also dealing with a major injury and won their first two games after losing sniper Steven Stamkos to a broken right tibia on Nov. 11. They were denied a third straight win thanks to a 6-3 setback in Phoenix on Saturday, just the club's third loss in the past 12 games.
Tampa Bay saw J.T. Brown score his first career goal and also saw Richard Panik and Alex Killorn light the lamp in the opener of a four-game swing out west.
Ben Bishop allowed three goals on 14 shots and was pulled in the second period. Anders Lindback turned aside 13-of-15 shots in relief.
"It was just one of those nights. They are not always going to be good nights and tonight wasn't good. It wasn't the way we wanted to play," said Bishop.
Tampa Bay lost for the first time in eight games this season versus the Western Conference. That included a win over a visiting Los Angeles club on Oct. 15, with the 5-1 decision snapping a three-game series losing streak.
Bishop made his first career start versus the Kings and posted 30 saves, while Martin St. Louis had two goals and an assist.
Lindback is 1-2-0 with a 3.11 GAA in five games (3 starts) in his career versus Los Angeles.
The Bolts are 4-1-0 with a tie in their last six trips to L.A.
Scrivens relieved Quick in that October loss, stopping 6-of-8 shots. He is 1-1-0 with a 3.57 GAA in three games (2 starts) versus the Lightning lifetime.
