Canadiens take advantage of Chara-less Bruins

Nov 14, 2014 - 4:17 AM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Pacioretty potted a pair of goals as the Montreal Canadiens bested the Boston Bruins by a 5-1 count at Bell Centre.

Dale Weise scored on a penalty shot, with Lars Eller and Jiri Sekac adding a tally each for the Canadiens, who tied a season high by winning their fourth straight game.

Carey Price came up with 21 saves for the win, as Montreal took both home contests in the season series against their bitter rivals.

"I think we're playing better at both ends of the rink. Sometimes the goals come in bunches, but that's the game we've been searching for the last while," said Pacioretty. "Tonight really showed that, we got a couple of bounces here and there. It does a lot for our confidence."

Dougie Hamilton picked up the lone score for the Bruins, who failed both ends of their eastern Canadian road trip. Niklas Svedberg was on the hook for all five goals on 34 shots.

Weise was awarded a penalty shot 2 1/2 minutes into the second and converted by sliding the puck through Svedberg's pads to even the score.

"It feels good to get a penalty shot goal, the first of my career. I had a couple in the minors, but obviously it means more in the NHL," Weise noted.

Despite misfiring on two power-play chances, the Habs did assume a 2-1 edge on Eller's backhander with seven minutes left.

Less than two minutes later, Pacioretty's laser from the inner edge of the left circle gave the hosts a 3-1 lead.

Montreal assumed a 4-1 edge at 5:09 of the third when David Desharnais and Pacioretty teamed up to convert a neutral-zone turnover by the Bruins, with the former feeding in front for a tip-in by the latter.

Sekac added a power-play score with 5:54 to play which officially put the game out of reach.

"It was going to take a team effort, and tonight we weren't good enough again. Once they got the third goal, they had more good chances after," Svedberg said. "Obviously, we were hoping to come back in the third. We were way too loose."

Hamilton's knuckling point blast confounded Price for the game's first goal with 3:56 remaining in the first period. The score came only four seconds into a P.A. Parenteau hooking minor.

Game Notes

The Canadiens also won four in a row from Oct. 16-25 ... Hamilton, Patrice Bergeron, Dennis Seidenberg, Brad Marchand and Reilly Smith all finished with minus-3 ratings ... Weise's penalty-shot score was his first career marker with the free shot and his first goal overall since April 9 at Chicago ... The clubs next meet in Boston on Nov. 22.
