Spooner scores twice as Bruins beat Senators
Mar 11, 2015 - 4:22 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Spooner scored a pair of goals as the Boston Bruins halted the Ottawa Senators' nine-game point streak with a 3-1 victory over on Tuesday.Loui Eriksson also lit the lamp for the Bruins, who have won three in a row. Tuukka Rask made 39 saves on his 28th birthday.
"After the second period I even mentioned it, you were up 3-0, you can thank your goaltender because we did a poor job of reloading," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "They were coming at us on the rush, and for whatever reason there was a lot of standing still."
Matt Puempel scored his first NHL goal for the Senators, who had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost in regulation for the first time since Feb. 16 against Carolina.
"One thing this team has shown over the last little while is resilience," said Ottawa head coach Dave Cameron. "We've been down and counted out before. We're just going to focus on how to beat Montreal the next game."
Craig Anderson stopped 19-of-22 shots for Ottawa, which fell seven points behind Boston for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Spooner opened the scoring on a power play 62 seconds into the second period when his shot from the right circle got past Anderson.
Eriksson and Spooner scored 92 seconds apart later in the frame. Eriksson chased down a puck in the Ottawa zone, made his way around Senators defenseman Cody Ceci and beat Anderson at 15:21.
Spooner lit the lamp for the second time at 16:53. Bruins forward Milan Lucic's centering feed went in off Spooner's skate, and replay showed no distinct kicking motion.
Puempel put the Senators on the board at 8:30 of the third. Patrick Wiercioch's shot hit off the end boards and went right to Puempel at the side of the net.
