Sens beat Bruins, tighten up wild-card race

Mar 20, 2015 - 2:45 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Turris finished with two goals and one assist, as Ottawa outgunned Boston by a 6-4 count in a contest with playoff- seeding implications.

Milan Michalek added a goal and two assists for the Senators, who have won five in a row and pulled within two points of their opponents in the race to lock up the final wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference.

Bobby Ryan, David Legwand and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also lit the lamp in the victory.

Andrew Hammond's streak of allowing two or fewer goals to start his career ended at 12 games, tying him with Boston's Frank Brimsek. Nonetheless, he remained unbeaten in regulation thanks to 31 saves.

Ryan Spooner tallied twice while Carl Soderberg and Torey Krug added a goal apiece for the Bruins, who have dropped three straight.

David Pastrnak contributed two assists, but Tuukka Rask allowed five scores on 31 shots in defeat.

Ryan was credited with the go-ahead marker -- on a bouncing puck in front -- coming with 8:32 left in the third which gave the Senators a 5-4 edge and marked his 200th NHL tally.

B's defenseman Dennis Seidenberg was sent off for holding the puck in his glove with just over four minutes to play, and though the Bruins killed off the penalty, Rask wasn't called to the bench until 1:27 remained.

Turris eventually sealed the outcome with 18.8 seconds showing.

Ottawa struck only 19 seconds after the opening faceoff, as Turris followed up his own miss from the left wing and scored from the slot on the rebound.

Only 40 seconds later, Soderberg beat Hammond on a screened shot from below the circles and Spooner gave the Bruins a 2-1 edge at 4:04 as Milan Lucic's screened shot from below the right circle clipped him on the way in.

Michalek tied things with just under five minutes left in the first, and Legwand gave the hosts a 3-2 lead at 3:11 of the second.

Boston had a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:22 after Turris and Eric Gryba were sent off 38 seconds apart and Spooner cashed in with 8:18 remaining, yet only 15 seconds later, a turnover led to Pageau restoring the hosts' edge at 4-3.

Krug, though, made it 4-4 just after the 5-on-4 edge expired.

Coming into the contest, Rask held a 7-2-2 record, 2.07 GAA, .932 save percentage and a pair of shutouts against the Senators ... Hammond became the first goaltender since Pittsburgh's Patrick Lalime (1996-97) to earn at least one point in his first 13 NHL starts ... Prior to the contest, the Senators sent forward Zack Smith to Binghamton of the AHL for a conditioning stint.
