Getzlaf's late goal lifts Ducks over Red Wings

Oct 12, 2014 - 3:36 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Getzlaf's second goal of the game with 24 seconds remaining lifted the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Getzlaf stripped defenseman Niklas Kronwall of the puck in the right corner, skated towards the front of the net and lifted a wrister over the shoulder of Jimmy Howard to give the Ducks the victory.

"We were able to get the job done and that's the main thing you are trying to build on early in the season," said Getzlaf.

Matt Beleskey also scored and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for the Ducks, who bounced back from a 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Luke Glendening and Gustav Nyquist both lit the lamp for Detroit. Howard stopped 23-of-26 shots in defeat.

"I thought we played well enough to at least go to overtime," said Nyquist. "Unfortunately, they got a goal at the end there."

After a scoreless first period, the Ducks got on the board 1:13 into the second. Howard ventured behind his net to push the puck along, but Patrick Maroon intercepted the pass. The puck hopped over a stick of Corey Perry in the slot, but Getzlaf pounced on it and wristed a shot past Howard.

Justin Abdelkader skated into the Ducks' zone and dished a pass over to Glendening, who skated through the left circle and backhanded the puck past Andersen just inside the left pipe for a tie game with 4:27 left in the second.

Henrik Zetterberg sent a stretch pass to Nyquist, catching the Ducks' defenders on a line change. Nyquist raced into Anaheim's zone and faked a shot at the top of the left circle before firing a wrister over the glove of Anderson into the top right corner of the net for a 2-1 game

The Ducks evened the game back up less than two minutes later. Ryan Kesler forced a turnover from Brendan Smith behind the net and sent a backhanded pass to the slot, where Belesky found twine with a quick wrister.
