Hiller, Flames shut out winless Hurricanes
Oct 24, 2014 - 4:35 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonas Hiller turned aside all 16 shots fired his way and Sean Monahan scored twice as the Calgary Flames shut out the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-0, on Thursday.Hiller was backed with plenty offensive support in his 22nd career shutout as Dennis Wideman, Matt Stajan and Lance Bouma all scored for Calgary, which bounced back from a 2-1 overtime loss on Tuesday to win its first home game of the season.
"To score that many goals is great," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said. "I challenged the players before the game to win the three periods. They did it, and they did it in a great fashion."
Cam Ward allowed all five goals on 24 shots as Carolina fell to 0-4-2 on the season.
"It got away from us," Carolina head coach Bill Peters said. "There were too many freebies, too many easy goals, and too much time and space."
Wideman started the scoring with 1:42 to play in the opening stanza after slapping home a shot from the right point.
Calgary added to its lead 32 seconds into the second. Paul Byron and Stajan moved into offensive zone on a 2-on-1. Stajan took Byron's feed from the left circle and deposited the puck into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Joe Colborne dished the puck to Jiri Hudler from behind the net. Hudler skated to the right circle and sent a cross-ice pass down low to Monahan, who tapped the puck into the net for his first goal of the season 4:14 into the second.
The Flames added two more goals in the third.
Monahan moved the puck from his forehand to his backhand in tight and slid the puck past Ward to make it a 4-0 game 3:23 into the stanza.
Josh Jooris fired a shot from the right boards and Bouma tapped the puck in the net to cap the scoring less than two minutes later.
