Miller, Canucks use 2nd straight shutout to top Canes

Jan 17, 2015 - 3:24 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Miller made 28 saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and second in as many nights as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Friday.

It was the first time in franchise history the Canucks recorded back-to-back shutouts on the road in consecutive days.

Derek Dorsett, Shawn Matthias and Alexandre Burrows all scored in the second period and Kevin Bieksa supplied two assists for the Canucks, who beat Philadelphia 4-0 on Thursday.

"Sometimes you need your goalie to bail you out and Ryan did," Vancouver head coach Willie Desjardins said. "It was great to win, but maybe a game we didn't deserve to win without our goaltending."

Cam Ward allowed all three goals on 13 shots over the first 40 minutes and Anton Khudobin turned aside all four shots fired his way in the third.

Vancouver has won its last four games against the Hurricanes.

After a scoreless first period, Dorsett got Vancouver on the board at 6:18 of the second. Justin Faulk misplayed the puck at the Carolina blue line. Dorsett hopped on it and beat Ward with a wrist shot.

Carolina had a chance to tie the game as Miller came way out of his net to play the puck and Riley Nash beat him to it, but Nash missed wide from the side of the net.

"I don't know what happened there. The puck was rolling," said Nash. "I just missed it. It's a tough one."

Moments later, the Canucks went up 2-0 with another breakaway goal. Matthias swept the puck past a defender, shifted the puck from his backhand to his forehand and slipped a wrister past Ward at 12:57.

Burrows ripped a shot under the glove of Ward from the left circle to make it a 3-0 game with 3:11 remaining in the period.

Miller made eight stops in the third to preserve the win.

Miller is the first Vancouver goaltender to record shutouts on back-to-back nights since Ken Lockett on April 1-2, 1975 ... Miller posted his 34th career shutout ... Burrows moved into 10th place in franchise history with 656 games played, while Vancouver defenseman Kevin Bieksa moved into sole possession of 15th place with 580 games ... Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis logged 19:48 of ice time after missing 22 games with a hip injury ... The Hurricanes have killed a franchise-best 30 consecutive penalties. The streak is second in the NHL this season behind Pittsburgh's 39.
